Saxon was at the forefront of the NWOBHM, with origins going back to the early 70s and a band called Son Of a Bitch. Their first couple of albums were nothing special but Strong Arm of the Law is an early masterpiece featuring excellent material all around and the next few are also brilliant. The major label debut Crusader saw them adopting more of a commercial hard rock style and their fortunes went downhill but by the early 90s they had returned to their roots. Lionheart saw the band heading in a power metal direction with mixed results but The Inner Sanctum is excellent and one of their best albums ever.
Dawson and Oliver were succesfully sued in 2003 for unlawfully registering the Saxon name for their own use in 1997.
