W.A.S.P. arose from the 80s Hollywood glam and sleaze scene but while the material was no less anthemic and simple it was rawer, heavier and faster than most of the others, putting them closer to the real metal camp than the majority of their contemporaries. Truly over-the-top performances helped to establish and maintain their popularity even well into the 90s. From The Crimson Idol onwards the band got somewhat more mature, darker and at times even sophisticated with the occasional concept album making an appearance in the catalogue.
