Bathory developed from a raw thrashing style similar but slightly better than Venom into the first true Viking Metal act incorporating epic structures and traditional instrumentation with lyrical matter dealing with Nordic mythology. Bathory's repertoire encompassed all elements of extreme metal including thrash, death and black metal and while the earlier albums are rightly regarded as absolute classics, everything featuring the Bathory name is very worthwhile. Bathory is without doubt one of the greatest and most legendary metal acts of all, and the trio of albums starting with Under the Sign of the Black Mark are among the best metal releases ever. Quorthon kept his actual identity secret for most of his life and even the recording personnel details on early Bathory albums is deliberately obscure. Kothaar was the name used by several different bass players; Vvnorth may not have even been an actual person. The untitled outro track on the first five albums is the same piece of music.
Quorthon was found dead in his home on June 7, 2004 of apparent heart failure. He was 39.
