Band: Strapping Young Lad
Strapping Young Lad began as a solo project for the eclectic Townsend but in the interceding years has become a serious band in its own right. The first album was designed as a parody of extreme metal, but by the second SYL was a legitimate recording and touring act and 'City' remains a classic of intense metallic chaos to this day. After extensive touring, Townsend iced the band for some years before returning with 'SYL'. That and 'Alien' weren't quite up to the same standard as previously but 'The New Black' is excellent.
In May 2007, Devin announced his retirement from both SYL and The Devin Townsend Band. He will continue making music by himself and releasing it under his own name, but both bands are no more.
