Sepultura are the most influential metal band to come out of Brazil. They began as a rather sloppy death metal band, IMO, but gradually developed an excellent mix of thrash and death which peaked with the release of "Arise". After the release of "Chaos AD", the band decided to incorporate more of the traditional Brazilian tribal drumming into their sound. Some people enjoyed this, but I am not one of them. Soon thereafter, original singer Max Cavalera left the band to form Soulfly, and Sepultura continued with new singer Derrick Greene. They continued with the tribal drumming approach but started incorporating more elements of nu-metal into their sound. Many of their older fans lost interest in the new material, myself included. Despite their current direction, "Arise" is still a classic and a good place to start for people new to the band.
After the release of Dante XXI, longtime drummer Igor Cavalera pulled out of the tour, replaced by Roy Mayorga (formerly of Soulfly). Although the band denied that his exit was permanent, it was later revealed that it was. Jean Dolabella has become the permanent replacement for Cavalera.
